Although it may not carry the same weight as final exams, midterms can still be a pretty grueling test.
Last week I spent the majority of my time preparing for a midterm in my Con Law class.
I got my notecards and quasi-outlines together. I was totally prepared. I walked in confidently. I took the exam. I walked out and immediately thought, “Well, now what?” (I don’t know about you, but that’s always my initial reaction after taking any exam.) Midterms, for obvious reasons, are very different from final exams. The beautiful thing about midterms (if you want to call it “beautiful”) is that they give you an accurate portrayal of your progress in the course while simultaneously (and relentlessly) informing you about where you should be. As such, here are two things I do after midterms.
• Take a realistic review of my progress.
After taking any kind of exam, I tend to want to just forget about everything I just endured. I pack up my notes, notebooks, and notecards. Honestly, I try to forget everything that just happened. However, with midterms it’s important not to regress after enduring the exam. Instead, I try to do the opposite. I try to delve deeper into the concepts and take a realistic review of the information. Did I actually understand the lesson? Did I thoroughly understand the doctrines? Based on my answer, I pretty much know what to do next. Maybe I need to study a little differently or maybe even a little harder.
With this step, the most important thing is to be honest with yourself. Sometimes that can be difficult, but by the time final exams come around, you’ll thank yourself for it.
• Eat, drink, and be merry (or recover)
Although it may not carry the same weight as final exams, midterms can still be a pretty grueling test; so, after taking one, we deserve a moment to breathe. This can look like a lot of things. Maybe eat your favorite meal, go to the park, or read a book for leisure. What did I do after my Con Law midterm? If you follow @the2llife on social media, then you already know. I went to a concert the day after my midterm…and it was amazing.
Midterms can be horrific. So, learn what you have to learn from it and then go celebrate. Just don’t go too crazy because final exams are right around the corner. *dun dun dun*
